Examples of Clinical Use of Botulinum Toxin: A Literature Review

Botulinum toxin (BoNT), being one of the most toxic substances known to mankind, due its unique mechanism action is used as an effective treatment for many diseases, including strabismus, blepharospasm, and hemifacial spasm. BoNT has received particular use a long-acting analgesic ability inhibit exocytosis pain neuropeptides, CGRP, Substance P, modulate expression pain-related receptors TRPV1, NMDA, AMPA, P2X3. injections are in conditions: diabetic neuropathy, chronic migraine, spinal cord injury. This article reviews possibilities clinical applications botulinum based on analysis articles PubMed database specific search terms. The keywords “botulinum toxin”, “treatment”, “clinical use”, “pain reduction” were obtain references. growing every year. Currently, at least 8 commercially available preparations types A B known, recognizable which Botox, Dysport, MyoBloc/NeuroBloc. Future research should focus improving safety profile increasing efficacy toxin-based drugs. New obtained through molecular reengineering will significantly increase therapeutic efficacy.
